The Green Insurer

With a mission to become the UK’s leading green insurance provider, The Green Insurer helps drivers to offset their carbon emissions, by incentivising a fuel-efficient approach to transport. With their custom, first-of-its-kind InsureTech app, the provider records driver data, provides carbon scores, and converts eco-friendly behaviour into rewards.

Evolving InsureTech with a Bespoke Expo Native Plugin

The Green Insurer faced a unique challenge: it needed a high-quality, scalable, maintainable, and cost-effective application that could connect with CMT’s Drive Well Telematics. While the business knew it needed a React Native app, there was one key problem: CMT’s telematics did not actively support React Native, with their SDKs being for Native apps only.

The provider needed an agency that could develop a complex and unique Expo Native Plugin that could integrate the CMT SDK into the app. It also needed a React Native team with in-depth Supabase expertise to drive the backend. And so, Morrow was enlisted, to bring The Green Insurer’s challenger app to life.

The solution

The project was immediately collaborative, with Morrow and The Green Insurer working closely to build a custom eco-app that would please customers and regulators alike.

Together, a React Native application was built that integrated with CMT’s Driver Telematics, converted driver data into carbon points and perks, provided user access to policies on the go-to, and connected drivers with eco-friendly modes of travel.

With a bespoke Expo Native Plugin and an approach that ensured The Green Insurer could secure regulatory approval, the business was able to successfully sell insurance policies by the end of 2023.

What was Done and Why

With a focus on Expo and Supabase, Morrow built a high-quality application that was easy to maintain, thanks to both iOS and Android apps running off the same code base. Today, this allows for ongoing maintenance and more manageable development, particularly if The Green Insurer looks to take the app in-house.

By using Expo and TypeScript, and Supabase as a backend provider, Morrow built an app that could be easily updated in a cost-effective means that was scalable for the business.

On launch, the application successfully tracked driver data, connected customers with their policies, and allowed them to access green-first insurers. It was also the only app of its kind to integrate CMT’s SDK into a React Native app.

Eco-First React Native Platform

Easy to maintain, cost-effective, and simple to integrate: The Green Insurer’s application has been designed to last for the long haul, while remaining up-to-date for the company’s discerning user base.

And, thanks to an ongoing relationship with Morrow, The Green Insurer can continue to set the pace for eco-first solutions in InsureTech.
